Spring is here, the buzzards have returned to Hinckley, the Herons and Osprey are back, and the first of the Purple Martins have arrived. The Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association leaders and volunteers have been busy getting the Martin houses cleaned and up, ready for their return.
The 2014 Ohio House of Representatives Bill 404 declared the Portage Lakes as the Purple Martin Capital of Ohio. This is directly in response to the dedication and hard work of establishing and maintaining the bird colonies by the Association officers and hundreds of volunteers.
Take a drive around the Portage Lakes and you will see the colonies of houses in several areas, with the most easily seen being at the boat launch on State Mill Rd.overlooking North Reservoir. Many homeowners also have established bird houses for these important mosquito eaters.
